Growing up here, fun activities was always part of my everyday life – I remember biking around my neighborhood with my friends, playing sports, being outside, enjoying a pretty fun childhood. But as I finished high school, I had this deep desire to see the world.

I guess the jump off point in embarking on that experience, was going to college at the University at Buffalo for Architecture. I liked Buffalo, but I was still seeking a different experience. So I went to Graduate School in South Carolina at Clemson University. I absolutely loved the South because it was so different. While there, I had the opportunity to study abroad in Genoa Italy, so my world view was expanding and I wanted more. By the time I graduated, we were still at the tail end of the recession, so a job in architecture was not in demand. After 8 months of searching, and hundreds of resumes sent out to no avail, I realized that going back to Broome to connect with the love and support from my family, friends, and community, was just what I needed to regroup and figure out my next move.

To be honest, given the state of the economy and since larger metropolitan areas were struggling in the job sector, I didn’t think finding a job in Broome was even an option. I was wrong and I was pleasantly surprised I must say. Delta Engineers and Architects happened to have a position open. I applied, I interviewed, and the rest is history.

My five years with Delta can be summed up as absolute growth.

Being able to pick the brains of seasoned engineers and architects while being able to design a multitude of different structures, has not only given me experience as an Architect, but truly as an effective designer. This type of hands-on, one-on-one experience is something I might not have had in a bigger city, where I would most likely just be doing design work without the immediate and willing access of so many Architects and Engineers. This, is truly an invaluable experience.

But my favorite, is the company culture…sure, we could work until 8 or 9 at night, but that kind of choice is not encouraged. As long as we complete our projects on time we are able to leave at 4:30-5pm, use the gym right in the building, or leave and enjoy life, unwind, whatever. My employers value and understand the importance of a healthy lifestyle in order for us to give our best when we are at work. Unlike most people in metropolitan areas who wait for TGIF to unwind, I can say that every day of the week is TGIF for me. When I’m done with work, I’m done. I get to meet my friends for dinner, or happy hour, golf, have bon fires, enjoy pool parties, or just have a mellow dinner with my girlfriend at home, be a couch potato, watch a movie and spend time with my dogs and cat.

To me a good life is simple, uncomplicated, and fulfilling. A life that supports my vision and passions is exactly what living here has allowed me to do. At this point, I have seen most of Europe and I’m not done yet. In fact, I’m packing up in September to go to Austria, Slovakia, and Hungary.

I’m still seeing the world while living happily and comfortably here in Broome.
